“What. Was. That” read a Facebook status update of a classmate of mine after the screening of this film in “History of International Cinema”. It wasn’t a rare reaction; in fact, most of the people I spoke to were raving over the ridiculousness of the entire thing. However, when it comes to Indian cinema, there are always two ways of looking at it: from a Western perspective and from an Indian perspective. One has to keep in mind that mainstream Indian films aren’t being catered to mainstream Americans (at least when this film was made; now it’s shifting a LITTLE). Mainstream Indian audiences aren’t composed of college-educated, thinking audiences. Rather, they are catered to lower classes, who are searching for something much different than realism: escapism.Company, though marketed like an intelligent, underworld crime thriller, should be kept in its original context. It’s the story of Chandu (played by Vivek Oberoi)
who – like any anti-hero in a gangster rise-and-fall story – is quickly initiated into a ruthless gang, but falls out afterwards, having to fight his way out. Malik (played by Ajay Devgan) is his don. Viewed in my class as mostly as intitation into Bollywood, this is not a classic film in any genre. It is not purely a crime film for Western audiences (it’s comedic interruptions and brief dance scenes take away from that) nor is is a classic Bollywood film. In fact, to Indian audiences, it was marketed as a smart, underworld crime thriller. I find it especially difficult to critique a film out of a culture I am so used to analyzing – the use of fish-eye lens may be a norm for action sequences across the Pacific, but here it is jarring. The overt use of editing and score fall into the same category. In terms of enjoyment, however, once the audience is able to step back and immerse into the Indian style of filmmaking, there is a lot of cool stuff here.
Though Company will never be praised for its originality – it borrows far too much from Goodfellas and Scarface for that – it should be marked as a milestone in Indian cinema. Though not without its mainstream qualities, Company marks one of the first few steps the country has taken to appeal to a more realistic, intelligent, and worldwide audience. As a final note, don’t dismiss director Ram Gopal Varma from this directorial effort. One of India’s premiere auteurs, Varma’s most admirable quality is confidence to experiment with expectations and mainstream style.

I'll openly admit that Ram Gopal Varma-produced or directed films are not my specialty, so I may be missing some serious context, seeing as how this film is a prequel to his classic film Company. 'D' tells the story of Deshu, a guy who works his way up the ranks of Mumbai underworld, until he practically runs it with business-like efficiency, until some people he's worked for decide they don't like how much power he has in the city. This rather standard plot could really be heightened by a good script with decently complex characters, or really supreme performances. Sadly, D has neither. The writing is bland, the characters mostly flat and while there are some good performances in the fray (I liked Randeep as the lead, as well as Chunky Pandey and Isha Koppikaar), for the most part the film just feels predictable and occasionally pretentious. There are so many scenes where dialogue is tuned out of and you just heard music while the actors mime carrying out the discussion. I kept thinking, "what the hell is this?" - perhaps it was something to do with censorship, but when nearly every dialogue scene had this trick used, it got really old very fast. Did the writer just forget to write half the damn script.
Ever since watching Milan Luthria's brilliant The Dirty Picture, I've been meaning to check out his previous hit, Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. I'm happy to report than when I finally did, I wasn't disappointed in the least. While Luthria may have began his career with the fairly forgettable Kachche Dhaage (starring Ajay Devgan and Saif Ali Khan in 1999), and Chori Chori, which I could barely sit through (despite severe cuteness from Rani Mukherjee) he's certainly progressed into one of the most solid film makers in India today.
OUATIM tells the story of Sultan Mirza (Ajay Devgan), an orphan who rises through the ranks of Mumbai's underworld into the benevolent don of the city around the 1970's. He helps out the common man when the state cannot do enough, and through these actions, his reputation is good among just about everybody but the police. As he rules Mumbai, another child grows up: Shoaib (Emraan Hashmi) is trouble from the beginning, and does not improve as he matures.
There's nothing mind-blowing about this tale of two gangsters and their power struggle, but so much can be said for the film getting everything right. Both Ajay and Emraan are fantastic in the leads, and their co-stars are also wonderful to watch. Prachi Desai as Mumtaz, Shoiab's girlfriend, is tragic in her attempts to ground the man who only seems to go from bad to worse, hinging on sociopath-like in his quest for more power. Kangna Raut plays Rehana, an actress who catches the eye of Sultan, with confident ease. It's certainly not the most challenging role for Kangna, who I know can do more, but it's fun to watch her in this, and her chemistry with Ajay just won me over.
Once Upon a Time in Mumbai 2010
The sole questionable aspect of the film is perhaps the portrayal of Sultan as a doer of good and a man who provides the city with a certain balance. The streets are safer, people's problems get sorted through him, the film implies, but he's still a smuggler and a gangster. This is not the only film where criminals seem the most moral of characters, despite their actions, and in that it largely reminded me of Nayagan, the Mani Ratnam classic that also tells the tale of an underworld don in Mumbai. The contrast between Sultan and Shoiab certainly makes you root more for the former.
Then there's the police man after Sultan - ACP Agnel Wilson, played by Randeep Hooda, whose name I was familiar with but had actually never seen on-screen prior to this movie. It's safe to say I was a goner pretty much instantly. He gives the role a certain intensity that just got me so hooked I paused the film and began looking up his filmography and mentally ticking off films I wanted to see him in. Of course, the tallness and the good looks didn't hurt, either, but I know my own tastes, and actors are rarely attractive to me unless I believe they've got some kind of talent, too. (I'll save the gushing to a post about him once I've seen more of him, for now I'll just say I'm very intrigued.)
The soundtrack is not particularly memorable (though there is a song that samples Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, one of my favourite oldies tracks ever) but fun enough. Much like TDP, Once Upon a Time In Mumbaai simply excels as a film - there isn't much I'd change or alter, and while it may not have made my top favourites like TDP did, it's certainly a film I'd recommend all around. And for once, I can see how the ending, while not open, lends itself to a sequel, which is coming out later this year, I believe. I heartily anticipate it.

In a police van, ACP Afaaque Baaghran (Anil Kapoor) listens to the story which is narrated by a gangster Manya Surve (John Abraham) who is grievously injured with a bullet-riddled body.Manohar Surve alias Manya Surve, is a decent student of Kirti College. He is equally good in studies and in nature, who had just finished his exams even whilst Vidya is trying to distract him for answers. Vidya asks him why he doesn't give the answers and Manya replies that even though they are in love he will not do anything stupid to stop him being successful. Vidya understands and persuades Manya to take her to meet his parents. Whilst presenting his girlfriend Vidya Joshi (Kangna Ranaut) to his mother to discuss their marriage, Manya is interrupted by his older brother Bhargav Surve. Bhargav is a gangster who is after an underworld don named Bhaskar (Ranjeet).
Soon enough, Bhargav is attacked by Bhaskar's goons, and beaten up. Manya jumps in to save him and the two brothers end up killing one of the goons. It is now the day of Manye's exam results but before he can discover his grades, Manye and his brother are arrested by Insp. Ambrolkar (Raju Kher) and end up in Yerawada Prison. In prison, another convict named Munir (Tusshar Kapoor) saves Manya from being attacked by a goon named Potya, during lunch time. In this assault, Bhargav is killed. Munir befriends Manya and the another convict named Veera, trains Manya to become stronger. Manya trains and then eventually is challenged by Potya. Manya takes the lead by staying in front of Potya during the whole fight. Soon enough, Potya backfires and beats Manya up, in which response, Manya stabs Potya to his death.
Later on, both Manya and Munir escape from the prison, and try to tie hands with two brothers who rule Bombay's deals. The first brother, Zubair Imtiaz Haskar (Manoj Bajpai) is cool, who is impressed by Manya. However, the second brother, Dilawar (Sonu Sood), disapproves of Manya and dislikes him. After this act Manya forms his own gang which consits of him, Munir, Veera and Gyancho, a sharpshooter, brought by Munir. Soon enough, Manya himself challenges the two Haskar brothers, with an chilling story following, with Manya finishing off Bhaskar (the gangster who had him and his brother arrested), Manya meeting up with Vidya again, and being revealed that at the start, Manya Surve had actually received 78% distinction in his exams.

The filming began in Mumbai during August 2012. Some parts have also been shot in Oman. Akshay Kumar will be playing the fictitious role of gangster Dawood Ibrahim. Kumar's character look was revealed on an reality show on Aapka Colors. It has also been reported that the film will feature an sequence with Kumar watching a cricket match as shown in trailer released on 28th may 2013 but the match is between India and Pakistan at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium in the '80s, is not been confirmed.
The lead actor was firstly chosen to be played by Emraan Hashmi, who also appeared in the original film. However, director Milan Luthria was searching for an older actor, and hence chose Akshay Kumar. Kumar is to play the role of Shoaib Khan (Dawood Ibrahim). In February 2012, it was announced that there were two male leads in the film, and the second parallel to Kumar, was signed to Shahid Kapoor. However, in March 2012, it was finalized that Imran Khan was actually playing the second male lead. Many female actors were considered for the female lead, including Illeana D'Cruz, Kareena Kapoor, Kangna Ranaut, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, however in April 2012, it was reported that Sonakshi Sinha had been casted.Sonali Bendre has also been roped in to play a leading character in the film. The film will mark Sonali Bendre's first role since Shankar Dada MBBS. In November 2012, it was announced that the film is scheduled to release on Eid 2013. TV actor Chetan Hansraj will also play a pivotal negative part in this film.
